Bulk Cables & Connectors are an important, but often overlooked, components in a display system. Poorly performing cables and connectors can adversely affect an entire system, which is why they are often called the weakest link in any chain of electronic devices.

There are so many different models and types of cables available in the industry that it's easy to be intimidated when glancing through a cable catalog. However, all the various cable types aren't that different. They are simply combined variations of basic cable configurations that fall into the following main conductor groups:

Individual conductor- Most basic of cables, referred to as wire. Consists of a center conductor wrapped in a plastic or rubberized outer jacket. Generally used to distribute low-frequency signals such as digital communication signals and computer ID-bit information.

Twisted pair- Comprised of two individual conductors -- generally running signal and return -- that have been twisted together to form one pair of cables. Available in two styles: unshielded and shielded.

Unshielded twisted pair or UTP- Most commonly seen in telecommunications and computer networking environments. Compatible with many different data transfer rates. CAT 5 is a type of UTP cable

Shielded twisted pair- Consists of a regular twisted pair surrounded by a wire braid shield or foil shield with a drain wire. Shield provides additional protection against low frequency EMI interference, making it useful for sensitive signal distribution of audio and computer sync information.

Coaxial- Two-conductor wire in which one conductor completely wraps the other, with the two separated by insulation. Abbreviated "coax." Due to complex design, coax is more expensive than twisted pair cable, but provides excellent performance and shielding that make it very reliable. Crimp style of cable termination used with these cables makes them very easy to terminate in the field.

Most A/V systems require cable with at least five conductors, more if audio or other signals need to be routed as well. High-resolution video signals are more sensitive to signal losses and require higher performance cables than do NTSC signals. For longer cable runs, a low loss cable is more appropriate.

When purchasing cable, there are three main factors that should be addressed before a decision is made:

  1. Versatility- know what the application is for the cable. Is it a temporary or permanent installation? Does the cable need to be flexible and installer-friendly (ease of use means reduced installation time)? Are there specific fire code requirements?

  2. Performance- know what types of sources will be distributed through the cables and how far the cable will be run. Both factors greatly influence cable performance.

  3. Price- how much a cable costs can have a significant impact on the total price of a system. Yet, the amount of cable that goes into a system is one of the last things addressed in the design stage.

Various Types Available:

Mini High Resolution Cables: Extron Mini High Resolution Cables are lighter, smaller in diameter, and more convenient to install than standard coaxial cables, yet still offers excellent video performance for carrying high resolution signals.

High Resolution Cables: These cables are able to handle the high resolution signals with the lowest losses and are ideal for critical applications and long cable runs, including high scan rate analog and demanding digital SDI applications.

Super High Resolution Cables: These cables are able to handle the highest resolution signals with the lowest losses and are ideal for the most critical applications and longest cable runs, including high scan rate analog and demanding digital SDI/HDSDI applications.

Multi-Conductor Installation Cables: Extron Multi-Conductor Cables offers an excellent solution for any A/V application requiring computer-video extension cabling that carries both computer-video signals and ID bits.

Communication Cables: Extron Communication Cables in plenum or non-plenum rated versions is the ideal for carrying control communications due to its low capacitance rating on the data pair wires, and sending remote power to control panels.

UTP Cables: Extron's Enhanced A/V UTP Cable is the ideal solution for systems utilizing Extron Twisted Pair products for A/V transmissions such as high resolution video, computer signals, serial control, and audio.

Serial Control/Audio Cables: Extron Low Capacitance Serial Control/Digital Audio Cables are ideal for serial control and AES/EBU commercial digital applications. This shielded twisted pair cable provides controlled impedances that exceed AES/EBU standards maintaining the integrity of the signal over long distances. This cable is a high performance solution for transmission and distribution of serial digital audio and serial control signals, such as RS-232, in a variety of A/V applications.

Low Capacitance Serial Control/Digital Audio Cables:

Speaker Cables: Extron Speaker Cables are high performance cable designed for connecting speakers to amplifiers in a wide variety of applications. These cables are available in three different gauges to meet attenuation and power requirements.

Crimp Connectors and Accessories: Extron Crimp Connectors and Accessories include the Universal Crimp Tool, Hand Wire Stripper, and a wide variety of high quality crimp connectors that simplify the in-field termination process and ensure quick and reliable connections.

Compression Connectors and Accessories: Extron Compression Connectors and Accessories include the Universal Compression Tool, Compression Coax Prep Tool, and a wide variety of high quality nickel and gold plated connectors that simplify the in-field termination process and ensure professional and reliable connections.

Bulk Cable Accessories: Extron offers a broad assortment of connectors, strain reliefs, and heat shrink for terminating and finishing bulk cable. Using these accessories with Extron bulk cable provides high quality connections and in-field adaptability for handling a wide variety of signal types.
