Matrix switchers route multiple audio/video sources to multiple audio/video destinations. These switchers accept audio/video signals from a range of input sources — computers, cameras, DVD players, etc.— and route the output to different destinations, such as projectors, monitors, and codecs.

To select the right matrix switcher for a specific environment, there are several guidelines to consider:

• Matrix switchers provide the ability to route any input to any output—or multiple outputs—at any time.

• Depending on the model, a matrix switcher can route composite video, S-video, HDTV/component video, RGsB/RGBS/RGBHV video, and/or stereo or mono audio signals.

• Matrix switchers can accommodate multiple signal types within a single unit; however, a signal type that is input can only be routed to an output of the same signal type. In other words, composite video inputs can only go to composite video outputs. 

Matrix switchers are used in environments such as corporate boardrooms, command and control centers, classrooms, restaurants, home theaters, and videoconference rooms.

Here's an example of how a matrix switcher can be used in a restaurant. Three audio/video sources and one audio-only source are being input to a composite video matrix switcher. These inputs can then be routed to one or more of the eight display devices and the audio system connected to the switcher.

Restaurant patrons could view a video source from a DVD player on two of the projectors, while a live feed from the digital satellite system is output to the plasmas. During this time, music can be played on the audio system. Switching different inputs to different outputs can be done on the fly with the push of a button.

Audio Matrix Switchers: Extron Audio matrix switchers are designed to route balanced or unbalanced audio signals. They range in sizes of 8x8 up to 64x64, and include a wide variety of features.

SDI/HD-SDI Matrix Switchers: Extron SDI/HD-SDI matrix switchers are designed to switch multiple serial digital video signals with embedded audio that comply with SMPTE and ITU standards for standard definition and high definition video. They are ideal for A/V presentation applications, as well as small video production and post-production systems.

VGA/Audio Matrix Switchers: Extron VGA matrix switchers are designed for high resolution computer-video with stereo audio applications.

Wideband RGB & Stereo Audio Matrix Switchers: Extron's wideband RGB matrix switchers provide a convenient single box solution for most common high resolution video and audio routing system designs. A total of 15 models in 8 I/O sizes are available for general use in a wide range of signal distribution applications where reliable switching is required.

Ultra-Wideband RGB & Stereo Audio Matrix Switchers: Extron's ultra-wideband RGB matrix switchers is designed to deliver exceptional performance in the most demanding, very high resolution computer-video and audio routing systems. There are 22 models in 11 I/O sizes that offer input flexibility, versatile control, and loss-free signal distribution.

Modular & Expandable Matrix Switchers: Certain Extron Matrix Switchers Series consists of modular RGB and video matrix switchers designed for applications requiring expandable routers. Each matrix switcher in this series provides balanced/unbalanced stereo audio switching. Four models are offered with flexible configurations up to 64x64 wideband [430 MHz (-3 dB) video bandwidth, fully loaded], while the others offer three models with flexible configurations up to 128x128-wideband [375 Hz (-3 dB) video bandwidth, fully loaded]. Scaling Matrix Switchers: Extron Scaling matrix switchers are designed for applications requiring all video input signals to be scaled to a common video output rate. They support high resolution, up to 1400x1050, as well as HDTV video signals.

Media Presentation: Extron has a media presentation matrix switcher that merges four independent matrix switchers into a single, compact enclosure: a 4x2 VGA switcher, a 4x2 S-video switcher, a 4x2 composite video switcher, and a 12x2 stereo audio switcher.

Twisted Pair Matrix Switchers: The Extron Twisted Pair matrix switchers work in conjunction with Extron twisted pair transmitters and receivers to provide simplified routing and control of signals ranging from RGBHV to composite video or S-video and stereo audio using twisted pair cable.
